National Strength & Conditioning Association Certifications

Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist (CSCS)

Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialists are professionals who apply scientific knowledge to train athletes for the primary goal of improving athletic performance. They conduct sport-specific testing sessions, design and implement safe and effective strength training and conditioning programs and provide guidance regarding nutrition and injury prevention. Recognizing that their area of expertise is separate and distinct, CSCSs consult with and refer athletes to other professionals when appropriate.

Each club in Major League Soccer is required to have at least one CSCS on First Team Staff.

Certified Performance & Sport Scientist (CPSS)

Certified Performance and Sport Scientists specialize in the application of scientific processes to improve individual and team athletic performance and decrease injury risk. CPSS-certified individuals work across multiple sport-related scientific disciplines to monitor and improve performance. Through the process of scientific research, they collect and analyze data, and make informed training recommendations based on the data. They instill best practices in the use of performance technology and guide programs through evidence-based training approaches.
